Device and App for fighting swarms of locusts

​​​​​​​BEAK is  a wearable device to the leg of poultry that serves as a solution to swarm of desert locusts, collects information about the situation of the locust’s disaster, and connects to a smartphone app to inform people of disaster data and disaster solutions.
What's the Challenge?
Climate change contributes to the spread of the swarm of locusts. Climate change brings about Indian Ocean Dipole. Indian Ocean Dipole makes East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Indian subcontinent an increased chance of rain. Locusts become gregarious or swarm when there are heavy rains in the arid region. The locust infestation is a pest outbreak of desert locusts that threatens the food supply across the regions and causing infectious diseases. As climate change continues, this disaster occurs more often. As climate change continues, this disaster occurs more often, and the damage is increasingly fatal. A desert locust. A swarm measuring 1 sq. km can eat as much food as 35,000 people in one day, according to FAO’s Locust Information Service. Furthermore, the locust causes the epizootics to people.

To protect the locust’s disaster, people use pesticides to kill a swarm of locusts. However, the problem is that pesticides have effects on not only the locust but also the natural ecosystem. The way is not great for ecosystem and next generation. On the other hands, the poultry is the nature predator of locust. The fowl can eat locust as prey. A single duck can eat more than 200 locusts each day. So, in the China, people already uses the army of ducks and chickens for fighting the swarm of locusts. This method is for sustainable way to prevent the farmland from swarm of pest.
Concept Generation
Why do we require BEAK? Using the poultry to kill locusts is useful only at the moment of disaster. To prepare the locust disaster, we should control the whole disaster system. we not only fight desert locust with poultry during the disaster, but also we need to prepare the disaster(pre-disaster) and have to gather disaster data after the disaster of locusts(post-disaster.) To be specific, the BEAK app and device would have functions to collecting data, management of the poultry army, alarming the disaster, and locating the locust and poultry. The device and apps help users to fight the pest disaster with poultry and keep sustainable method for the locations.
Ideation Sketch
It is a device attached to the body of poultry, so it is designed for poultry to move and act more comfortably. In particular, it is most ideal for poultry to meet a herd of locusts and be more active when hunting locusts, so the device is attached to the poultry's legs underneath. Shield-leg band-type devices also have symbolism that protects us from enemies, and are attached to the legs to make it easier to gather information from locusts.​​​​​​​

To design the appropriate device for poultry legs, I studied the appropriate shape for the legs. From the shield shape to beak shape, I made various wearable device prototype fitting for poultry legs.
Scale Study
The actual BEAK device is designed to fit the feet in various sizes. They design the scale to match the foot size of poultry such as ducks, chickens, geese, etc. that live in the disaster area. I studied the size of BEAK that fits various poultry sizes. The BEAK device prototype would be manufactured large, medium, and small size.

1.Users would get the disaster alarm of a swarm of locusts through the app before the locusts cause the disaster. The app would repeatedly be updated by gathering data after the last disaster.
2. People put devices on the legs of ducks and chickens, which are locusts’ natural enemies, to prepare for disaster of locusts. If users don’t have chickens and ducks, they can rent them from nearby farms through BEAK app.

3. The users would send chicken or duck troops to the place where a swarm of locusts occurs. And the poultry would devour the locust plague.
4. Users can check how locusts are treated in real-time through BEAK device’s camera mounted on poultry’s legs, and collect locusts’ information from the BEAK device and app and make them into big data to prepare for the next disaster.
After the Disaster
5. After the locust disaster, Users can bring poultry back home by using a location tracker through the BEAK app. Also, Even if other chickens and ducks are mixed during the war, they can be distinguished through the app.
6. After a disaster, the device would be removed from the legs of poultry, and users can link the information to the app for making data which would become disaster preparation big data.

1. Searching for disaster information;
Users confirm the situation and location of a disaster and search nearby poultry farms, which have chicken or duck and information. And request the other farm to work together to fight a swarm of locusts.
2. Check individual poultry information;
After the disaster, users would be able to check poultry information and preparing for disasters to combat a swarm of locusts in the future.
3. Disaster alarm warning;
Users can get real-time disaster alerts and information about the disaster.
4. Disaster live cam;
Users can watch the real-time disaster situation and location tracking poultry and locusts and collect the data from the scene.
Function & Detail
To prevent desert locust's disaster, I propose the concept that the both device and apps protech from the disaster from the locust. The BEAK has a camera, Bluetooth, an internal antenna, and a motion sensor. These components collect the disaster’s data in which poultry eats locusts during the disaster and the information of locusts; size, shape, location, motions, and appearance time. After collecting, the data would be sent to the BEAK app. The user wears the BEAK device to poultry like a protective shield for the warriors in the war. User wish for victory in disaster.
